items and or equipment that levels with experience points. pets that actually level would be neat, or a sword that for x amount of lvls adds str or damage.

Wow, you spent too much time playing the magic user in D&D. Everything is level-dependant and increases that way.
BTW, epic level necromancers=my favorite.
