I don't know if this is right, but I found "fear" to be something already in game, but not obvious.
For example: A lvl 19 char has 35 Melee and high Def as well. A lvl 25 char has 28 Melee and the same Def. By all rights the lvl 19 char should be able to pwn the lvl 25 in a duel but the lvl 19 cannot connect with the lvl 25 char and get pwnd. A few levels later the lvl 19 (now 23) is starting to hit the lvl 25 (who's stats have not changed) and at lvl 25 the lvl 19 can now pwn the orginal lvl 25.
To me it seemed that "fear" was trying to take on something a lot higher levelled and similar to me taking on a 7 foot tall 250 pound steroid monkey, the fear off loss is engrained before the fight even starts.
Just my thoughts, I tested it a bit with a few chars but not an alcoholic. I save that for real life.
